The famous Discovery Tree, a once 300 feet tall behemoth of about 1000 years, holds a tragic past. This once awe-inspiring tree in Calaveras Big Tree State Park fell victim to a man who went bear hunting in the 1850s. Upon stumbling across this natural wonder, he did what he thought was best—sawing the monumental tree down.
