This is a mare with a severe locking stifle we operated on recently. It is pretty obvious that she cannot bend the leg properly. Not all cases are this severe. In some horses the stifle will unlock for a few steps and then lock again. It can be pretty dangerous if you're riding a horse with this condition as they can fall when it locks.
